Objectively speaking, he’s not ugly. His jaw would break knuckles in a fight, and some women might like the contrast between his denim-blue eyes and jet-black hair. His five o’clock shadow complements his full lips, and his face manages to be masculine without having the brow ridge of a caveman. He probably did okay with the ladies back in the eighteenth century. Or whenever he still had a pulse.

Every once in a while, a work comes along that grabs you around the heart and keeps you on the edge until the last page. Quinn Reaper is one of those.
Quinn is an irreverent, flawed (who of us isn’t?) young woman spending her life protecting her broken bits by using her sardonic tongue and flouting all convention. Even as you’re laughing out loud, you know there’s more to her than meets the eye—a streetwise tenderness and a sentient intelligence.
Her story unfolds in an utterly engaging display of humor, pathos, love, and redemption. Jesi Kellis has a knack for pulling the threads together in a masterful weave that includes characters you can’t help loving, a road trip that keeps you laughing, a burgeoning romance, and a surprise ending that may have you pulling an all-nighter to finish. Quinn Reaper is well worth the read.

Wildly original, with fabulous, well-crafted characters. I closed the book with a feeling I only get from a small handful of the very finest stories, where the magic doesn’t immediately dissipate, where I sit for a few moments just absorbing the perfection and living with the characters.

The Well-Read Pirate Queen: Quinn Reaper by Jesi Kellis
Quinn tries her best to convince you she's unlikable even as you wish she was real so she could be your best friend (not that she would remember your name). Her voice is snap-crackle-pop funny pop funny and is an endless snarky delight in this unique story which delivers a side of romance I never knew I wanted. If you are 10,000 years old like me, maybe you remember the grouchy but very very hot chemistry happening in Moonlighting? Quinn Reaper gives similar vibes within an out-there but fully believable storyline, while sneakily making you care a whole lot about the characters along the way. I really enjoyed this book from start to finish, and I hope to see a lot more from this talented writer!

Jesi Kellis does a fabulous job of making the main character, Quinn, someone who you couldn't stand to spend time with, yet relatable and freaking hilarious. This book had me cackling at the banter between Quinn and Milo.
A fresh take on coming to terms with mortality and what's important in life without taking death too seriously.
- Gustaf, Amazon reviewer
This book really makes you think. It’s not a typical rom-com. It is a journey of one woman who faces the end of her very young life only to find answers and things she didn’t know she needed. There were so many unexpected paths followed to the characters finding answers. I really enjoyed how the lead character Quinn dealt with life. She had so much tragedy in her life but finally finds peace. I loved this book.

Oftentimes, books are advertised as humorous, but the humor tends to wane as one gets more into the book. Not so, this book. It will keep you laughing all the way through! Her wit is so sharp, original, and eloquent - I would love to have the main character (and probably the author, since she wrote the humor) as one of my best friends. Just a delightful escape from all the somber things going on in the world, and just what I needed! Thank you!

The creativity grabbed my attention first, only to be taken over by real humor. Wary of any reviews about LOL humor to the degree I avoid books with these reviews, I have to say this is the first time I truly laughed out loud many times throughout a book. This is a rare talent for an author to share. Along with the laughs provided, there is a real story embedded, resulting in a very satisfying, memorable read. Thank you Jesi Kellis, for sharing this with your readers.

Laughed out loud a lot, and I never do that. Great character development, love your descriptions of things. One of the most inventive plots I have read in ages. Keep writing!!!!!

Unusual and funny/sad . Truly a love story as well as a healing story.

Any book that makes me laugh deserves five stars, the story itself was great, full of humor, heartbreak and more. I will admit the cover is what convinced me to pick this up.

First few pages, didn't think I was going to be able to finish it....but then something clicked with Quinn and me....while she's a little more negative than me and i hate diet soda with a passion, I got her thought processes and quirks, by the time they got to the fair, I was in love with all the characters and laughing out loud...as my husband sat across from me on couch rolling eyes asking "what's so funny? Thought you said it was about a girl dying"...but seriously it's a good laugh, with some heavy stuff thrown in to give the story meat. Loved it.

In Quinn Reaper I enjoyed a slow build, strong protagonist-arc, deeply three-dimensional, emotionally damaged characters, lots of witty dialogue, dark humor, romantic suspense, and a powerful, inspiring ending. When I connected to Quinn (which for me didn't happen on the first few pages) I was hooked--and the hook was tethered to my heart. This new author's flawless debut story and characters stuck with me after I finished the book, and I love that!

I loved this book! My husband kept looking at me wondering why I was laughing. This was the best book I’ve read this year couldn’t put it down till I finished it.

This book is absolutely hilarious. I absolutely loved everything about it.
- Denise, Amazon reviewer
Equal parts macabre and hilarious for anyone willing to invest themselves into an intelligently woven story. The pages turn with the inevitability of taxes and... puppies? Truffles? Haha, looking forward to more from this author!
- Nathan, Amazon reviewer
I started out reading this because I liked the cover. By the 70% mark I was not putting it down until I read every page. 10/10 would read more.

I love this author's writing. It's not often that a book causes me to laugh out loud but this one did... several times. I hope she keeps on writing as she has a definite gift for storytelling.
- Katherine, Amazon reviewer
Ok, so I am totally in love with Milo and Quinn. Seriously. I loved the snarky attitude from Quinn, and of course all the sarcasm back from Milo. But also in the midst, when you think maybe Quinn is a grumpy jerk to everyone, you see her soft heart come through. This book had a lots of depth and some angst toward the end. But still with humor. I hope we get more stories from this talented author!
- Nichole, Amazon reviewer
This was an awesome read. It opens with an interesting premise but then deviates from where you think it is going to go. But you enjoy the whole ride. The writing is very enjoyable and Kellis does a masterful job of balancing the line between humor and heart.
I look forward to reading more from the author!

I’ve gotten plenty of strange looks while ready this gem in public. Ever giggle an guffaw was well earned by this new to me author. It is a wonderful stand alone book that I would happily ready more of.

Never laughed so hard in my life! Q-Dawg and M-Dawg's exchanges are "immortal". First & only in the series so far but I'll be watching for the next when I hope the adventures contunue. Note: those offended by the eff-bomb need not attend.
- Gloria, Amazon reviewer
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. The basic concept appealed to me, having been a fan of similar concepts such as the TV series "Dead Like Me". This book only marginally shared ideas with that show, which turned out to be a good thing.
While the book is enjoyable in the first half, it really steps up its game in the second and mixed the humor with characters getting to know one another, facing personal demons, and moving from one-hour to fully formed people. This continues, of course, to be accompanied by plenty of the sexual and scatological humor established in the first half, so fair warning to those sensitive to such things.
In the end, this is a fun and surprising book and I'll be on the lookout for further works from this author.

I was stuck in to Quinn's heart-warming (well, as warm as dead hearts can get) adventure. I know this apartment, I know this earthly anti-protagoness and her neighbours, I know that guy, too. The dialogue is pert, realistic and you can see the body language, feel the cringing of the awkward moments, and yeah, I swallowed the little reality created around what happens in death easily. It's a fun fantasy, irreverent, intelligently written, full of that push-pull tension between relatable characters that I enjoy. None of this perfect princess heroine nonsense, anyone can bag a few souls with a little training, some eyelash-batting savvy, and an Oreo or 10.

For a reader, such as myself, gifted with age, Quinn Reaper opens up a world of youth and death, current slang, issues, and life styles, and the age old themes of love and loss, friendship and sacrifice. So, a weighty read, but leavened with outrageous acts and thoughts, humor and a couple I would love to know...from a safe distance! A unique love story, a journey that will intrigue, entertain, and enrich the reader.
An author, new to me, with immense talent and imagination.
- Donna, Goodreads reviewer
This book made me laugh myself to tears multiple times and cry in my wine at least twice. Quinn is snarky, sarcastic, heartbreakingly flawed, and someone I’d love to drink tequila shots with in a dive bar. Her road trip from hell highlights the bizarre and beautiful moments that make life precious. There’s humor, heartbreak, and enough spice to make things interesting.
- Melee , Goodreads reviewer
Funny book. This is so totally out of my regular reading preferences, but I thought this was hilarious.
- Jim, Goodreads reviewer
We can only hope this first novel is the start of a brilliant career by this new author whose voice is all her own. Quinn Reaper will make you laugh, irritate you, cause you tears, and make you fall in love. Often all with the same act! The book is a road trip as four oddballs all twine their destinies for better or worse. And almost all of them are actually alive.

Have my wife to thank for picking this one out for me. She really nailed it.
This is a cleaver, unique sotryline. Had me laughing (quite embarrassingly) out loud. Loved the characters.

This book has me from the start. Potty mouthed but so very funny. A very thought provoking story. Excellent characters and story line. Roll on next book.

If you enjoyed Under the Whispering Door, but secretly wanted a lot more R-rated, snarky humor, then there’s a pretty good chance that you will inhale this book as quickly as I did.
